Eric Garner Death News Update: Garner Estate Accepts $5.9M Settlement Offer From NYC
Eric Garner's family was awarded $5.9 million in a wrongful death settlement against the City of New York Monday.
"Following a judicious review of the claim and facts of this case, my office was able to reach a settlement with the estate of Eric Garner that is in the best interests of all parties," New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer said in a statement about the multimillion dollar settlement.
Stringer added the settlement "acknowledges the tragic nature of Mr. Garner's death" but that "the city has not admitted liability." Stringer also referenced the outrage surrounding Garner's death.
"We are all familiar with the events that led to the death of Eric Garner and the extraordinary impact his passing has had on our City and our nation," he said. "It forced us to examine the state of race relations, and the relationship between our police force and the people they serve."
Garner died shortly after Staten Island police officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold during his arrest on July 17, 2014. A video recording of the incident shows the 43-year-old unarmed black man had a verbal confrontation with Pantaleo and another white cop who accused him of selling untaxed cigarettes. During the arrest, Pantaleo put the married father of six in a chokehold and ignored Garner's repeated cry, "I can't breathe."
Garner died from a heart attack about an hour after his arrest.
Garner's death sparked a wave of national protests against police brutality and excessive force. The Garner estate also filed a claim against the city last October for damages related to his death.
