NFL Offseason News: Kansas City Chiefs Give Justin Houston A Monster Contract, Dez Bryant & Cowboys Agree to Extension, NY Giants Sign Safety
The Kansas City Chiefs signed linebacker Justin Houston to a monster deal.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs and linebacker Justin Houston agreed to a six-year $101 million deal that includes $52.9 million in guaranteed money. The contract is the largest ever given to a linebacker in NFL and Chiefs history. Both the Chiefs and Houston tweeted the news regarding the contract.
The Bleacher Report reports the former Georgia Bulldog linebacker led the league in sacks last year with 22. He was a half sack away from tying the single-season record for sacks in a season, which is held by New York Giants great Michael Strahan.
Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said in a statement that he is excited that Houston is coming back.
"As we've said from the beginning, Justin the football player, and the person, is someone we wanted to be a part of our organization. We are very happy that he will remain a member of the Chiefs," he stated.
In terms of guaranteed money, Houston's contract is second in the NFL. The Miami Dolphins' defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh agreed on a six-year, $114 million contract that includes $59.95 million in guaranteed money.
Dez Bryant Signs a 5-Year $70 Million Dollar Deal With Cowboys
After weeks of negotiating, the Dallas Cowboys and star wide receiver Dez Bryant agreed on a five-year, $77 million deal, according to ESPN. The contract also includes $48 million in guaranteed money.
Bryant was franchise tagged by the Cowboys, where he was scheduled to make $12.8 million for the upcoming season. He even threatened to sit out training camp and some regular season games if his contract situation wasn't resolved.
Bryant had a monster season with 88 catches for 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns. His low-light of the season, however, was the fourth-down catch during the divisional round against the Green Bay Packers last season. Originally thought to be a catch, the call was controversially overturned and the Cowboys went on to lose the game, ending their season.
In five seasons with the Cowboys, Bryant has caught 381 passes for 5,424 yards and 56 touchdowns.
New York Giants Signed Safety Jeromy Miles to a One Year Contract
The New York Giants signed former Baltimore Ravens safety Jeromy Miles to a one-year deal the Giants announced. The former Ravens safety will reunite with new Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who was the defensive back coach for the Ravens last year.
Miles started in two games last season, which is two more than any other Giants safety on the roster.
