'Orange Is the New Black' Puerto Rican Star Berto Colon Channels a Drug Dealer with Raw Conviction
Cesar's back in action!
Dealing drugs and landing some tough, yet vulnerable ladies in the slammer was all in a day's work for "Orange Is the New Black" drug dealer Cesar, who is played by Puerto Rican actor Berto Colon.
During the first season of the award-winning Netflix original series, Colon appeared as the man responsible for putting both Aleida (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and her daughter Daynara (Dascha Polanco) behind bars.
While his character was pretty much absent from Season 2, he's making a comeback in Season 3.
The 42-year-old actor, who came to the U.S. as a teen and went on to star in "Two Night Stand" and "Fighting," as well as lend his voice to "Grand Theft Auto VI," is also active on social media. He recently re-tweeted some scenes from "OITNB" that were captured by a fan.
Colon added that his character, Cesar is an "honest thug" who he enjoys playing, but he also points out that art doesn't imitate life in his case.
"OITNB" is known for its welcoming environment on set and allowing the actors' creativity to flow -- and Colon reiterated this as well.
"There is a lot of freedom on this show to take liberties and be honest," Colon explained.
Freedom of expression, honesty and acceptance comes into play on and off the set, which has been vital for the cast that has just added Australian model-turned-DJ-turned actress Ruby Rose who came out as gay when she was young. LGBT activist Laverne Cox is also the first openly transgender person to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in the acting category, further proving the series' power toward change.
The outpouring of support from the crew, cast and fans has been overwhelming for Colon as well who calls his experience on the show "a surreal feeling."
In the third season, besides the commanding presence of Cesar, we see Daya (Polanco) faced with some tough choices and outcomes surrounding the birth of her child and her relationship with John Bennett (Matt McGorry).
Tune into "Orange Is the New Black" Season 3 on Netflix.
