Amanda Knox Trial Verdict: Jury Begins Delibrations on Retrial; Decision Today?
Former foreign exchange student Amanda Knox and her lawyers are awaiting the verdict in the retrial stemming from the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher.
Knox currently lives in Seattle and it remains unclear whether she will be forced to return to Italy, where she served four years behind bars before being acquitted in 2011. Knox's former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, was also found guilty and was acquitted as well.
Dalla Vedova, one of Knox's attorneys, seemed to indicate that communication between her and her client has not been a problem despite the fact that the 26-year-old was not present at the second appeal.
"Amanda has been in touch with us daily," Vedova said. "She is very nervous and worried since her life is again jeopardized, but we are confident the jury will acquit because she didn't do it."
According to the LA Times, the verdict will probably go to the supreme court before being finalized. If it goes through then Knox would be facing extradition.
A Kercher family attorney, Francesco Maresca, said that the case is not likely to be heard until April or May of 2015.
The Kercher family had released a statement back in 2011 when Knox was initially released.
"We respect the decision of the judges but we do not understand how the decision of the first trial could be so radically overturned," the family said at the time, via the Associated Press. "We still trust the Italian justice system and hope that the truth will eventually emerge."
Knox had also released a statement when she was released.
"Those who wrote, those who defended me, those who were close, those who prayed for me," Knox wrote. "I love you, Amanda."
