The TLC network announced Thursday it is officially canceling its popular reality TV series "19 Kids and Counting."

The show about the conservative Christian family "will no longer appear on the air," the network said in a statement.

The show's future came into question following revelations in May that the eldest son, Josh Duggar, 27, molested five children -- four of which were his sisters.

TLC said the attention surrounding the Duggar family has brought to light the importance of educating about child protection. The network plans to partner with advocacy and victims' rights groups on a "multiplatform campaign to raise awareness and educate parents and families about the issue."

The network will also create a one-hour documentary that features the Duggar family and "other survivors and families that have been affected by abuse."

The popular "19 Kids and Counting" show followed the lives of Arkansas-based conservative Christian couple Jim Bob Duggar and Michelle Duggar and their 19 kids.

Police reports showed Josh had allegedly committed the acts of sexual abuse 12 years earlier, and Jim Bob and Michelle allegedly failed to cooperate with the investigation or get their children counseling. This led to the reality TV series being taken off the air in May.

Thursday, Jim Bob and Michelle posted an official statement regarding the cancellation of "19 Kids and Counting" to their family website.

"With God's grace and help Josh, our daughters and our entire family overcame a terrible situation, found healing and a way forward. We are so pleased with the wonderful adults they have all become," the statement reads.

"It is our prayer that the painful situation our family went through many years ago can point people toward faith in God and help others who also have lived through similar dark situations to find help, hope and healing, as well."

Jim Bob and Michelle added they look forward to working with TLC on this upcoming documentary "and hope that it is an encouragement to many."
