‘The Goonies’ to Get a Sequel With Richard Donner, Potentially Original Cast [WATCH]
Richard Donner recently announced there is going to be a sequel to "The Goonies," and it does not appear to be a remake or a reboot, according to TMZ.
TMZ is known for its ambush style of filming and inciting celebrities into revealing facts about their lives or the shows they're working on. That was the case when a photographer for the online tabloid site was shooting video of Richard Donner signing autographs in Hollywood.
Donner was the director for the 1985 classic adventure film "The Goonies," which was a family film (although there were some foul-mouthed kid characters in it). The smash hit also included legendary Hollywood director Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus penning the script for the film. It starred Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Kerry Green, Jeff Cohen, Jonathan Ke Quan, Joe Pantoliano and the late Mary Ellen Trainor.
Momentum for the film in the '80s peaked around $61 million for the domestic mark, according to Box Office Mojo. No data is available for the international box office results.
But now that there is an IMDb page for "The Goonies 2," the film has progressed from the rumor stage to the planning stages, just as Donner said in the video while answering TMZ's questions. The comment was rather off-the-cuff in response to TMZ asking him whether comic book films are overstaying their welcome in cinema, with Hollywood using them as a crutch.
He was asked if he would do another comic book movie, which he did in the late '70s with "Superman," and he responded with news of "The Goonies" sequel and said he hopes all the original stars will be returning for the film.
See the video below of Donner's impromptu comments.
