'Orange Is the New Black' Star Dascha Polanco Attends Latina Expo, Discusses Body Issues in Hollywood
"Orange Is The New Black" star Dascha Polanco has a few things to say about body image in Hollywood. The Dominican actress was part of a panel of Latinos who participated in Latina Magazine's first ever Latina Beauty, Hair & Wellness Expo.
The event, which took place on July 18 in New Jersey, also included actress and "The Real" host Adrienne Bailon, Roc Nation executive Lenny Santiago, model Denise Bidot and personal trainer Massiel Arias. The panel discussed topics like beauty and body image within the Latino community, reported Complex.
"What does my body have to do with me being able to portray a role," said the Polanco when discussing Hollywood's negative ideas about curvy women. "I don't think I'm fat, I think I'm curvy, soy mujerón (I'm a lot of woman)."
The actress, who plays Dayanara Diaz on the Netflix original series, has been very vocal about learning to love her curvier figure and explained why she wanted to be a part of this panel.
"It's been something that I have struggled with throughout my life and I think that as I'm becoming older and I became a woman and I've gone through the phases, I'm learning how to love myself more," she told The Huffington Post.
"I think it's very important [to talk about it] when you're in a position of where you are looked upon or onto as a role model or inspiration. Young girls and women, we all need that sense of security and that empowerment, so it's very important for me to display that."
Polanco also shared, when she was growing up, she looked up to celebrities who mostly resembled her when it came to body proportions. The 33-year-old cites Puerto Rican singer Iris Chacón and Mexican singer Selena Quintanilla as her body-image role models.
She also praised Serena Williams for her muscular body and said, "It's not a size zero, but she looks amazing."
