‘Ant Man’ Disappoints at the Box Office
When compared with similar releases from Marvel, "Ant Man" pulled a slightly disappointing box-office draw last weekend.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film pulled in a meager $58 million for the weekend. These days, that is extremely rare for a Marvel release based on their comic books.
Some might argue that this low number might be because they did not have a tie-in to their other major movies that have already had the momentum flowing, like an "Avengers"-style tie-in. But that is not exactly the case
By comparison, "Guardians of the Galaxy" pulled in $94 million in its opening weekend and went on to a total box-office haul of $333 million domestic and $774 million worldwide. "Guardians" did not have anything to tie-in and give them momentum previous to the film's release. It debuted outside of the "Avengers" universe and made quite a splash.
So is this trend something that Marvel needs to worry about? Just consider that a lot of the comic book movie momentum is shifting over to DC with their highly anticipated upcoming releases of films like "Superman v Batman," "Suicide Squad" and "Justice League."
Heroic Universe also notes that another box-office Marvel failure, "The Incredible Hulk," also took in a similar opening weekend haul and stopped just shy of $135 million. That is way off from what Marvel is generally used to for its films.
But there is also another way of looking at it, as pointed out by the distribution chief over at Disney, Dave Hollis.
"No one else could take what is really an obscure character and launch it in such a big way," Hollis said. "It's a sign that they're doing so much right and that it's a brand that has overwhelming momentum."
Momentum or not, if audiences don't pick up on the movie with good word-of-mouth, there may not be much staying power in it for the tiny superhero.
