Acer Chromebook 11 C740 Review: Rugged Chromebook Geared at Students
The Acer Chromebook 11 C740 is a rugged Chromebook designed for use by high school students. But, it lacks a fast processor or vibrant screen that other Chromebooks have, according to Tech Radar.
The Acer Chromebook 11 C740 is designed to be lugged around town, dropped and shared among several users, but its performance could be frustrating to some users.
The Acer C740 has an 11.6-inch screen that displays 1,366 x 768 pixels. This is enough resolution for the screen to be considered HD, but the quality of the display is rather poor. The display often appears shadowy and dull around the corners. This is not the type of display suitable for watching movies.
Acer says that the display is made that way to limit eye strain during extended uses. This might help children who use the Chromebook for many hours at a time. Students who only operate text-only programs might like the dull display, but those who want to look at more vibrant images and videos could get annoyed rather quickly. Despite its lacking screen color intensity, the laptop makes up for it in other areas.
The clumsy student will be forgiven for being careless with this Chromebook. The Acer C740 is capable of withstanding up to 130 pounds of force and it can be dropped from up to 1.5 feet without sustaining any damage.
The chassis on the Acer C740 makes the device look pretty nice. The silver matte chassis will attract a lot of fingerprints and it will scratch easily, so it might not look nice for very long.
The two panels of the Acer C740 are attached by very sturdy hinges, so unless it is dropped from a considerable height, it will stay intact.
The Acer C740 is nice and light, weighing just 2.87 pounds, but its internal components are where it starts to lose value.
With just a 1.5 GHz dual-core Intel Celeron processor, the Chromebook will not be high performance by any means. It does have 4 GB of RAM, so that should help it multitask, if needed.
Users should not plan on storing very much on this Chromebook because it only includes 16 GB of storage. Thankfully, Google includes two years of 100 GB of Google Drive storage after the purchase of this Chromebook.
The Acer C740 Chromebook is designed to be an affordable laptop that can be purchased by schools and students, according to Slashgear. More advanced features can be found in other Chromebooks, but the cost will go up.
