Recording artists Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj are no strangers; the songbirds have been pictured together chatting over the years at several awards shows, including the 2011 American Music Awards and the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. That's why it was a surprise to most fans when a Twitter feud erupted between the two on Tuesday.

Minaj's "Anaconda" and "Feeling Myself" songs were snubbed in the 2015 MTV VMA nominations for Video of the Year. When she took to Twitter to complain about it on Tuesday, followers assumed her comment was aimed at Swift.

"If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year," Minaj tweeted, disappointed that her solo video and her duet with Beyoncé didn't make the cut.

To some fans, her "women with slim bodies" reference appeared to be aimed at either Swift or Beyoncé since they are the only female recording artist nominees for "Video of the Year," however, slender women also appear in Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" music video, which was also nominated.

Swift took offense to Minaj's remark and tweeted, "@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.."

The "Anaconda" singer responded, "Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13."

"@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on," Swift wrote, clearly missing Minaj's point entirely.

"Anaconda" went viral worldwide. It is strange that it wasn't picked for Video of the Year. "When the 'other' girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get that nomination," Minaj wrote.

She also tweeted that "Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it."

Minaj was making the argument that black female rappers are often marginalized, something she has experienced throughout her career.

The 2015 MTV VMA's has nominated "Anaconda" for Best Female Video and Best Hip Hop Video, and her song "Bang Bang" with Jessie J and Ariana Grande has been nominated for Best Collaboration.
