Best-selling author Gillian Flynn's "Dark Places" has now been transcribed for the big-screen with Charlize Theron playing the lead role.

Theron, who is an Oscar winner, plays the role of a woman (Libby) who revisits the tragedy that befell her family 25 years earlier, according to an article on The Financial Express.

What is apparent from the film is that this is a piece made for a woman who revisits the past and it appears to take place mostly in flashbacks. The tragedy her family was a victim of was a mass murder, which took the lives of her mother and sisters.

She tries to investigate the past because her only living relative, her brother Ben (Corey Stoll), is in prison for the crime. It is her intent to uncover the truth of what happened to her family and whether or not Ben actually committed the murders.

The movie is an ensemble piece that also features Chloe Grace Moretz ("If I Stay") and Nicholas Hoult ("X-Men"). Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men") also plays Libby's mother in flashbacks.

According to the IMDb, this ensemble piece will also feature Andrea Roth ("Rescue Me") and Tye Sheridan ("Mud").

The film takes place in both the present and the past with events playing out through memories. Libby was only 8 years old when her family was murdered in their rural Kansas farmhouse.

The film follows closely along to the book, which chronicles the events that led up to that night and the horrible truths that she soon discovers, which leads to a dramatic conclusion.

The film was directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner, who also co-wrote the script with Flynn.

Flynn is also the author of the book "Gone Girl," which was turned into a film as well by Ben Affleck. Affleck starred in the film alongside Rosamund Pike.

"Dark Places" is set to hit theaters on Aug. 7 this year.
