Floyd Mayweather Next Fight: Why Andre Berto Should Not Be Floyd's Final Opponent
When the undefeated champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s 49th and last opponent was revealed to be former champion Andre Berto, several boxers and boxing experts reacted why Berto should not be "The Money's" final foe on the ring.
Amir Khan's reaction
Although the World Boxing Council Silver welterweight titlist is Berto's friend, as they share the same adviser, Al Haymon, Khan was not able to contain himself into thinking that Mayweather is returning for one more bout.
"I still think that fight can happen because I don't believe Floyd is going to retire after a fight like that...I still think that he will come back for one more fight and that could be me," Khan told the Mirror.
Mayweather Sr.'s reaction
Even Mayweather's father was campaigning for his son to just hang his gloves right now, instead of taking an easy route out.
"Floyd told me he just wants to get a couple of easy fights... My honest opinion, if he feels that way, he should get on out of the game... Anybody's body, 20 years, anybody's body gets tired - and it's been every day of 20 years, and longer, for my son," the elder Mayweather informed MLive.com.
Based from the boxing trainer's statements, his son's fight with Berto, which was earlier confirmed by TMZ, may not be his final appearance on the ring yet.
Going on 50-0?
This may be a sensible plan for Mayweather as he might be aiming to surpass the legendary Rocky Marciano's 49-0 win-loss record. With Mayweather's current record of 48 wins, truly, "a couple of easy fights" could earn him his 49th and 50th win to tie and then break Marciano's impressive record.
With the same belief that Mayweather is coming back in May for his 50th fight, several boxers has been calling out to him, aside from Khan. Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is one of the warriors who feel that a clash with Mayweather will be a great treat to fans who want an intense showdown.
Golovkin vs. Mayweather
But for former featherweight and super feather weight champion, Mikey Garcia, Triple G should just focus his attention to fighting boxers in his weight class. He told Fight Hub TV that the people who like to pit Mayweather and GGG against one another "don't know boxing" and that they just want Mayweather to fight Golovkin because people generally don't like "The Money" - his style or even his way of living. The Mexican-American boxer also stated that there are division classes for a reason.
Although some boxing fans may want to see Mayweather lose, others like a fan named "Cracky" stated in a forum that he also wants Mayweather to "validate" his claim that he could beat GGG, which a clash on the ring may prove.
Golovkin told ESPN's SportsNation that he is even willing to come down at 154 to box with him.
"He's [Mayweather] a great champion. Look at me, I'm not big. My last couple of fights I'm 158, 159. This is possible for me. I'm going to 154 just for Floyd. I understand this is the biggest fight in the world," Golovkin said, as quoted by Boxing News 24.
Thus, Mayweather should not end his professional career fighting Berto, especially that he had just come from a bout against Filipino icon and former eight division champion, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao. Although the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight was a disappointing match, Mayweather should make his farewell fights something that will truly cement his exemplary and methodical fighting style. A match with a knockout warrior like GGG could create an impression.
