MLB Stats Leaders: Miguel Cabrera, Albert Pujols Leading the Way
Nearly 100 games into this season, at least one Latin American born player is leading the American League in every major hitting statistic. Those major hitting stats include home runs, batting average and of course, runs batted in.
Venezuelan great Miguel Cabrera leads the AL (and all of baseball) in batting average. Cabrera is currently out with an injury for the Detroit Tigers, but he is expected back soon. His .350 batting average is tops in the league, and Cabrera's career batting average is now a tremendous .321. It doesn't look like Cabrera will win his third career MVP award, but the Hall of Fame has a place for him when he retires.
As far as the long ball is concerned, Albert Pujols leads in that category. Pujols has had a rejuvenated season at the age of 35 with 29 home runs so far. The Los Angeles Angels are in first place in the AL West thanks to the Pujols-Mike Trout connection. Pujols hasn't hit 40 home runs in a season since 2010 when he was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals, but he only needs 11 more in the final 60 plus games remaining. The Dominican great now has 549 career home runs, the 15th most in MLB history. Next up on the all-time home run list is fellow countryman Manny Ramirez with 555 home runs.
Hitting the ball over the fence provides excitement and clears the bases, and putting up high batting average shows patience and elite eye vision at the plate. However, we can't overlook those who drive in runs at a high rate.
We currently have a three way tie for first place in the AL in runs batted in. Toronto Blue Jays veteran Jose Bautista has 65 runs batted in this season, and he also leads the league in walks with 68. The Blue Jays are still very much in this playoff race as they are in second place in the AL East. The Kansas City Royals have the best record in the AL thanks to Kendrys Morales. The Cuban infielder also has 65 runs batted in this season. He has proven to be a terrific signing by the Royals this year. In 2009 Morales batted in 109 runs and finished fifth in the MVP voting. It looks like Morales will have his second career 100 RBI season.
Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees also has 65 runs batted in this season.
