Fans used to the apocalyptic maritime action of TNT's “The Last Ship” will soon be treated to some unnerving head games as well in Sundays episode, titled "Safe Zone."

As reported by Spoilers Guide, Rachel (Rhona Mitra) -- who is still trying to piece together Dr. Hunter's all important lost formula -- must now deal with the fact that Niels (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), a man she considers her sworn enemy, is on board the USS Nathan James.

The president of the United States is also aboard the ship and talks to Cpt. Tom Chandler (Eric Dane). He talks of his uneasiness in his new role, but then in the preview he is taken aboard the ship and it appears as though he is taken captive.

Well into their intense second season, the actors and the producers of the series offered some insight about what was in store for the crew at a recent Comic-Con panel. As fans know, the “The Last Ship” is all about survivors that are trying to find a cure to stop a deadly virus and hopefully save humanity. Creator and showrunner of the series Hank Steinberg dangled a disturbing scenario before the fans and asked: “What if somebody didn’t want the cure? Who would that be?”

“Wouldn’t there be people who were naturally immune to this disease and if they were, they would become almost like superheroes in this world. Everyone else is scrambling around with gas masks and scarves … but they can walk the earth untouched,” Steinberg wondered.

“They can break in anywhere, take anything they want, and if they band together, they can become incredibly powerful,” he added, as reported in Entertainment Weekly.

Although “The Last Ship” is the kind of action-oriented show that tends to spread the drama around Dane’s character, Tom Chandler seems to always be at the center of any the major danger. When asked about this, the 42-year-old actor seemed to dismiss any desire to be the focus of the story, saying, “If it were up to me, I’d sit in the chair every episode and sip some coffee.”

“The Last Ship” airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on TNT.
