‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Plot Details: Film's Villain Is Unlike Any We've Seen Before, Says Director
"Kung Fu Panda 3" is underway and a new detail of the plot has been revealed.
Our black-and-white hero will be tested anew as he is to face an entirely different kind of animal in his third go-around.
In the first film, the unconventional dumpling-eating panda fulfilled the Dragon Warrior prophecy and defeated Tai Lung, a brute snow leopard.
In 2011's "Kung Fu Panda 2," Po found inner peace en route to foil the plans of the scheming peafowl Shen.
The film's co-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson has shed new details about the franchise's next villain.
Kai will be bigger and more imposing than previous antagonists. The new baddie will also be endowed with supernatural power.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the filmmakers' intended Kai to be distinguished from the rest.
"I drew a little chart that had a picture of Tai Lung next to Po, a picture of Shen next to Po, and a picture of this new villain coming in and it was like 'You can't go brawler because Tai Lung was brawler. You can't go smarter because Shen was smarter,'' explained Nelson. "Where can you go? You have to go supernatural, bigger, and even more intimidating."
Kai is a bull that has large horns, wears leather armor, and is a master swords-bull although his weapon of choice are his chains, which he wears as a bracelet.
It was earlier reported by USA Today that Oscar Award winning actor J.K. Simmons will be the voice of the villainous bovine.
"I've played a variety of badasses in my career," recalled Simmons. "I do like to mix it up. I like being a character actor playing different kinds of guys. Or, now, different kinds of beasts."
When asked about preparing for the character he answered, "You have to find the nature of the beast that Kai is. There's a lot of vocal stuff I'm throwing out there that's somewhere between dialogue and animal growls when Kai snorts."
Pressed on the villain's motivations, the "Whiplash" actor said, "Let's just say Kai has been away. Now that's he's back, he's not happy about life in general." He then added, "One thing he finds when he returns is that pandas make him particularly unhappy."
J.K. Simmons will be joined by fellow newcomer Bryan Cranston.
Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, and Seth Rogen will be reprising their animal selves in the movie.
"Kung Fu Panda 3" is scheduled to release on January 29, 2016.
