Janitor Looses Leg in China's Most Recent Escalator Accident [Video]
In Shanghai, a 35-year-old man janitor named Zhang who was working by a mall escalator become trapped by the contraption and had to have his leg amputated.
Security footage, provided by CCTV News, shows the cleaner doing routine maintenance on the escalator, positioning a cloth near the top of the moving stairs before falling into floor panels that trapped him. The video goes on to show firefighters rescuing the worker who later had his leg amputated from the calf down at a hospital.
As reported by CNN, a family member relayed, "The doctor said in order to prevent (the) situation from getting worse, they amputated his left calf."
Although an investigation of the unfortunate incident is still ongoing, Chinese media is reporting the accident was the victim’s fault, saying Zhang failed to properly observe operational regulations by not shutting the escalator down before attempting to clean it.
The incident, which took place at a shopping mall called Cloud Nine on Saturday, happens to be the third serious escalator-related accident for China in a week.
Last Wednesday in Central China, a 30-year-old mother named Xiang Liujuan fell through an escalator’s metal panel and died. The young woman was able to push her 2-year-old out of danger before she perished. And two days prior to that tragedy, in the southwestern province of Guangxi, a toddler's hand and arm were caught by an escalator. The child, who was hospitalized, sustained multiple injuries, which included a fractured arm.
Awareness of the seeming rampant danger of escalators in the People’s Republic of China has led to a wave of comic strategies for avoiding escalator injury appearing on social media. As collected on Buzzfeed, some of the methods to avoid injury on a Chinese escalator include employing a tool such as an umbrella to feel your way to safety or even leaping over the mouth of the coming escalator steps.
