Acer is offering cheap laptops that are cloud-enabled, just like Google's Chromebooks. Instead of running the Chrome operating system, Acer Cloudbooks will run Windows 10.

Acer announced two Cloudbooks Tuesday, the Aspire One Cloudbook 11 and the Aspire One Cloudbook 14. Much like Google's Chromebooks, these laptops are designed to work with online apps and offer limited storage and basic hardware specifications. These laptops are designed for budget-conscious customers that do not need a powerful unit or large amounts of storage.

These laptops from Acer are being called Cloudbooks because they will use the cloud to operate. Owners will get a one-year subscription to Office 365, access to the Microsoft OneDrive to store files online and usage of Acer's cloud-based apps.

Acer's Cloudbooks are very similar to Google's Chromebooks, they are basic laptops designed for people who are able to perform most of their tasks online. Chromebooks use the Chrome operating system, while Cloudbooks use the brand new Windows 10 operating system. Users might feel more comfortable with Windows 10 if they have used other Windows operating systems in the past.

Acer also sells Chromebooks along with Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba. Chromebooks have been very popular in education settings, but not in the business world, according to a report from research firm Gartner.

Gartner says that many people do not know what Chromebooks can do. Acer might face the same challenge when they try to promote the Cloudbooks. According to an Acer spokeswoman, Cloudbooks are designed for students and general home uses.

The Acer Aspire One Cloudbook 11 has a 11.6-inch screen, weighs 2.5 pounds and sells for just $169. For just $199, the Acer Aspire One Cloudbook 14 can be purchased. It includes a 14-inch screen and weighs 3.5 pounds.

Both Cloudbooks come with Windows 10 Home Edition, Office 365 Personal and up to 1 TB of OneDrive space. Acer cloud-based apps called abApps are also included. These abApps give users photo, music, documents and file solutions.

The Cloudbooks come with a 1.6 GHz Celeron processor that can be turbo-boosted to 2.16 GHz. They also include 2 GB of RAm. The 11.6-inch model has either 16 or 32 GB of onboard storage, while the 14-inch model offers either 32 GB or 64 GB of storage. The storage can be increased with flash memory cards.

The battery life on the 11.6-inch model is up to seven hours and the 14-inch model is about six hours.
