Just weeks before Donald Trump launched his 2016 presidential campaign, he had a private phone conversation with his longtime ally President Bill Clinton.

Inside sources say President Clinton called the real estate magnate in May, and the two engaged in a genial conversation without discussing Hillary Clinton's candidacy in the race.

According to the Washington Post, four Trump allies and one Clinton associate said Clinton was supportive of Trump's efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party. The 42nd president also talked about the political landscape from his own perspective.

Bill Clinton's personal office confirmed the call occurred, according to The New York Times, which reported, "Mr. Trump reached out to President Clinton a few times. ... President Clinton returned his call in late May."

An aide said, "While we don't make it a practice to discuss the president's private conversations, we can tell you that the presidential race was not discussed."

However, the four anonymous sources inside of the Trump camp told the Washington Post Trump was candid about his intention to run for president.

"The tone of the call was informal, and Clinton never urged Trump to run, the four people said," reports the Washington Post. "Rather, they said, Clinton sounded curious about Trump's moves toward a presidential bid and told Trump that he was striking a chord with frustrated conservatives and was a rising force on the right."

Trump has a long history with the Clintons. Not only did he donate $100,000 to the Clinton Foundation, but the Clintons were guests at Trump's third wedding in 2005 to his current wife Melania Knauss. Clinton even has a membership at one of Trump's golf courses.

Trump and Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, have exchanged a number of barbs since they both entered the 2016 race. The former first lady has condemned Trump's inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants and his claim Sen. John McCain is not a war hero.

"There's nothing funny about the hate he is spewing at immigrants and families, and now the insults he has directed at a genuine war hero, Sen. John McCain," Clinton said about the media personality at a Democratic dinner in Arkansas last month.

Trump, in turn, has described Hillary as the worst secretary of state "in history" and declared she would be a terrible president.
