Hit Horror Novel ‘Horrorstör’ Picked up For Series on Fox
In what appears to be a surge in horror-themed TV shows, Fox has put in a pilot order for a TV series based on the hit novel "Horrorstör" by author Grady Hendrix.
According to Deadline, The Jackal Group acquired the TV rights to the novel and Fox has put in the order, which will be joining other hit horror themed shows on the network like "Scream Queens," "The X-Files" and "Sleepy Hollow."
The theme of the novel is centered around the main character Amy, who is a 26-year-old recovering alcoholic. She takes a job in a furniture store named ORSK that specializes in European furniture. The store appears to be a fictional incarnation of IKEA, given that it is a superstore that specializes in furniture.
The thing about this store is that it sells things to people that gives them a fantasy of some sort. The store itself actually preys upon its customers and gives them a euphoric feeling that makes their inner most wishes and desires come true.
But like any good horror story, there is a price to pay. The customers will get what they want, but it will come about in the most horrific ways. It's a new take on "The Monkey's Paw" or Wes Craven's "Wishmaster."
The network has billed the upcoming series as a dramedy and the episodes will be one-hour long.
John Wilwol of The Washington Post gave the book a favorable review, describing the layout as what could double for an IKEA catalogue.
He described the book as both funny and horrifying, saying the author (Hendrix) "strikes a nice balance between comedy and horror."
There has been no word yet as to when the series will premiere on the network. It may come as soon as this fall or the pilot may be put off until the midseason.
