Lincoln Burrows and Michael Scofield will soon be back in action as Fox confirms that a sequel to the highly acclaimed television series is currently in development.

Fox Television Group chairman and CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden made the announcement at the network's Television Critic's Association panel on Thursday.

Both executives also confirmed that the actors from the original series will also return to reprise their roles.

"It's going to bring back both brothers, [played by] Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell," said Newman.

TV Line noted that the new series will be "a bit of a sequel" of the previous show.

"It picks up the characters several years after we left them in the last season of the show," added Walden.

The network chief also added that aside from the roles of Miller and Purcell, other popular characters from the program will also be back. However, Walden did not mention who among the original cast will return as part of the upcoming series.

Walden also hinted on the possible plot the upcoming sequel will take on.

He revealed that executive producer Paul Scheuring is writing the screenplay for the sequel that will have 10 episodes. Although he noted that some parts of the plot are still unclear, the story will answer and tap on some questions that were raised during the finale of the series.

The CEO also revealed that the new series will take a departure from the straight-to-video finale on "Prison Break: The Final Break" where the character of Michael died as Miller will return to the show.

"What Paul pitched to us was a very logical and believable - in the world of 'Prison Break' - explanation for why our characters are alive and still moving around the world," said Walden.

Newman echoed the sentiment.

"Paul has a very detailed and incredible story for why these characters become relevant again," said the co-chairman to Variety.

Production of the series is set for next year with a release date targeted for the summer season of 2016-17.

The timeline seems to be perfect for both Purcell and Miller, who are once again teamed up, and will come out in the new CW series based from the DC Comics universe, "Legends of Tomorrow."

Walden gave credit to Netflix and acknowledged that the new show would not have been possible without the Internet streaming site, as the show remains a favorite of subscribers in the streaming service.
