Kim Richards Shoplifting Arrest News: Family Hopes Judge Will Order 'Real Housewife' Back to Rehab as Part of Plea Deal
Kim Richards' family is hoping a California judge will use the threat of prison time to order her back to a rehab facility.
Radar Online reports the entire family, sisters Kyle and Kathy included, is hoping the judge will add that stipulation to a plea deal arrangement already being worked on by her attorney Robert Shapiro and the district attorney's office.
The 50-year-old Richards was arrested in California last weekend after allegedly attempting to steal $600 worth of merchandise from an area Target store. That arrest came on the heels of the former "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star recently being taken into custody on public intoxication charges.
The terms of the plea deal Shapiro and the DA had agreed to in the latter case called for three years of probation, 30 days in jail or 30 days community labor, and 52 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Given her latest arrest, the DA is almost certain to add at least a 90 day rehab stint to her sentence.
"Kim's family wants her attorney to not fight the rehab because it's so obvious she needs it," said a source. "Even though she has several failed rehab stints, the family thinks this is the last hope to save Kim's life."
In the shoplifting case, Richards was taken to the Valley Jail in Van Nuys and formally booked shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2. She remained in custody overnight and was released just before 2 p.m. Monday after posting a $5,000 bond.
In the aftermath, Richards' ex-husband, Monty told Entertainment Tonight he was "in complete shock," insisting that he believed it was either alcohol or drug-related.
"She was arrested for shoplifting toys in a cart, but this was a clear misunderstanding," he said. "This must be some kind of mistake."
Richards was fired from "Real Housewives" following her public drunkenness arrest.
