Bobbi Kristina Brown Death News: Bobby Brown Could Inherit Daughter's Estate Based on Georgia Law
Bobby Brown could legally lay claim to daughter Bobbi Kristina's estimated $20 million fortune based on state law in Georgia where she resided at the time of her death.
NJ.com reports when Whitney Houston made her young daughter her sole heir, she stipulated that if Bobbi Kristina died unmarried, without children and left no will of her own, that the money would be divided among living relatives. Despite this, the "My Prerogative" singer could have a claim.
"To the extent that Bobbi has assets in her own name -- whether received from her mother's trust or otherwise - her father is likely the sole heir under the laws of intestacy of Georgia, assuming she did not do a will, which most people her age would not have done," said New Jersey attorney Andrew Cevasco, a partner in the estate and trust practice at Archer and Greiner.
Bobbi Kristina was laid to rest alongside her mom at Fairview Cemetery in New Jersey earlier this month. Even before she succumbed to injuries apparently sustained in her Roswell area home in late January, her family members were openly feuding over who should now control the estate her superstar mom left to her when she died more than three years ago.
Back in April, an Atlanta court judge named Brown and Aunt Pat Houston co-guardians of Bobbi Kristina, and Bedelia Hargrove was appointed conservator in charge of overseeing all her assets.
Since then, Leolah Brown, Bobbi Kristina's aunt on her father's side, has regularly accused Pat Houston of seeking to profit financially from her niece's death. Pat Houston is the wife of Whitney Houston's brother Gary and the executor of the late music legend's estate.
Meanwhile, reports are Bobbi Kristina's longtime boyfriend Nick Gordon does not stand to gain any of the inheritance. Bobby Brown insists his daughter and Gordon were never married, despite their onetime boasts on social media otherwise.
"Georgia law indicates that the husband would receive 100 percent if there are no children," Cevasco added. "But there is some speculation that Nick caused her death. If that can be proven, then it is likely, even if he can prove they were married, that he would be excluded from any inheritance."
Several media outlets have now reported authorities have launched a criminal probe into the circumstances of Bobbi Kristina's death, after doctors discovered unexplained bruises on her body and several friends of Whitney Houston's only daughter claimed she was regularly abused by Gordon.
