‘True Detective’ on HBO Season 2 Finale Recap
Critical reviews for season 2 of the HBO series "True Detective" have been somewhat hard on the show. Now that the season finale has wrapped up and the entire storyline (given that it is an anthology series) is finished, Rolling Stone had some quite unkind words for it.
Although others around the web called the season okay, Rolling Stone did not give it quite that much mercy. The last episode was 90 minutes long, and the show itself was in need of some redemption, following the intense first season that garnered a lot of critical appraise.
The season dragged along with very few arcs to give it any sustaining value for its four main characters, but the finale episode did conclude a few storylines in classic fashion.
Gangster and sometimes good guy Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) finally got his revenge. After successfully defending himself from his primary foes, in the end, it was the enemy he never saw coming that got him.
The strained relationship he had with his wife, who always wore a tense smile when he was around and seemed hopelessly depressed, may have given way to a happier ending for her. But his death such a lonesome scene that fans might have felt sorry for the character.
Frank was not the only one in the show that was hopelessly destined for failure though. In the end, Ray Velcoro (Collin Farrell) left this Earth, and fans found out that he left more than one legacy behind. He was indeed the father of his ex-wife's child and he is the father of Ani Bezzerides' (Rachel McAdams) child.
It also turned out that Ben Caspere's death was nothing more than a revenge killing 23 years in the making. Caspere was done in by the vigilante son of the slain jewelry store owners.
As far as critical judgment goes, Deadline alternatively reports that the season was far more eventful and pleasing than season 1.
