"NCIS" is rumored to be considering taking more risks than ever before during the show's upcoming 13th season.

One prime example could be the long-running, CBS-aired series' Sept. 22 premiere, is set to start with Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) fighting for his life aboard a Navy hospital ship after being shot at least twice. Meanwhile, Agent Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) is heading for Shanghai with Joanna Teague (Mimi Rogers) in search of the Calling.

CarterMatt reports Jon Cryer is set to guest star as the surgeon entrusted with trying to save Gibbs' life. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported Harmon recently signed on for another season on the show, but during a recent talk showrunner Gary Glasberg was quite vague about what could come of him over the long haul.

No matter what, Glasberg assured "the team will be there for each other as they go through the long-term and psychological effects of what happened."

As for DiNozzo, the end of Season 12, which is now available on CBS All Access, already saw him in contact with the head of The Calling, Daniel Budd (Giles Matthey), before now going in search of the gang. Several media outlets have already reported Weatherly is expected to take on more of a larger role with the show this season.

Before recently signing on for another season, Harmon teased the idea of what the show might look like without him by telling "The Late Late Show with James Corden" host that the series "births characters leaving" during a recent guest appearance.

Later, he added. "It's not my choice, number one, but I think anybody is replaceable."

"NCIS" also stars Sean Murray (Timothy McGee), Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciutto) and Rocky Carroll (Leon Vance).
