Bernie Sanders Platform: Democratic Presidential Candidate Releases Anti-Racial Inequality Policy
Bernie Sanders, the liberal 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, released details of a sweeping platform he envisions utilizing to combat racial inequality.
After the "Black Lives Matters" protesters overtook the stage at an event he was scheduled to speak at in Seattle, Sanders released policy proposals he deemed related to "the four central types of violence waged against black and brown Americans: physical, political, legal and economic."
Staffers from Sanders campaign also posted details of the proposals on his website on Sunday, and later that evening he addressed the issue before a crowd of more than 20,000, his largest to date, in Portland.
According to the Huffington Post, Sanders' plan calls for a series of police reforms, among them the demilitarization of police forces, a federal program giving police body cameras, and increasing police transparency and accountability.
The Vermont senator also favors a system devoid of mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent offenses and one that addresses the disproportionately widening rate at which blacks are targeted by police.
"It is an obscenity that we stigmatize so many young Americans with a criminal record for smoking marijuana, but not one major Wall Street executive has been prosecuted for causing the near collapse of our entire economy," he said. "This must change. We must address the lingering unjust stereotypes that lead to the labeling of black youths as 'thugs.'"
Sanders also advocates for the expansion of the Voting Rights Act to fend off what he calls political violence. He is also in favor of restoring the Act's "preclearance" provision, gutted by the Supreme Court last year, and ending laws which ban convicted felons from voting.
The 73-year-old senator has also vowed to dedicate greater outreach to the African-American community and merge his platform of fighting economic inequality with issues of racial inequality. He was among the first politicians to voice concerns about the recent death of Sandra Bland, a black woman found hanged in a Texas jail in July after a traffic-related arrest, and has called for a comprehensive review of the way law enforcement departments operate across the country.
The end result is Sanders has continued to draw the largest crowds of any 2016 candidate for the Oval Office.
"It is an outrage that in these early years of the 21st century we are seeing intolerable acts of violence being perpetuated by police," Sanders said in a fact sheet released by his campaign. "We need a societal transformation to make it clear that black lives matter, and racism cannot be accepted in a civilized country."
