What started in 2013 as a low-budget horror film, "The Purge" has become a cultural phenomenon that has reached ever-expanding heights. The film garnered quite a cult following in the beginning, and is now expected to continue the story from its recent sequel, with star Frank Grillo to return, according to Variety.

Grillo originally had a scheduling conflict due to his DirecTV show, but the producers were able to work it out and he is expected to return to the next installment. James DeMonaco is also returning to write and direct the film.

The basic premise of "The Purge" movies is set in a near future environment where the new "Founding Fathers" have assumed governmental control and lowered the crime rate to nearly zero. That is due to their annual "purge," which basically makes all crime legal for 12 hours in a night devoted to the purging of people's animosity.

The 12-hour period of Purging includes the legalization of murder, theft, rape and any other ghastly crimes that the people in this future society desire. The government suspends all emergency services and the entire night erupts into immediate anarchy, every year.

That is, of course, how the new future has kept the crime rate so low, by not acknowledging it during the 12-hour purge. It is a turn-the-cheek method of citizens "getting it out of their system." The people in society wait to exact their revenge and let their rage loose until the night for which they will not be held accountable.

In the last film, "The Purge: Anarchy," Frank Grillo played the role of the Sergeant, a man who is hell-bent on getting revenge over the killing of his son. His son had died following a car crash involving another man who was apparently drunk.

But on the night of the purge, he gets roped into helping a small band of people who have been caught outdoors after the purge begins. This is where his agenda goes off course and he spends the night keeping them alive.

According to Box Office Mojo, "Anarchy" cost $9 million to make and brought in $110 million for Universal. The first film cost $3 million to make and brought in $89 million worldwide. Although the box-office numbers are not quite that high, for an R-rated film at such a low budget, that is quite a haul.

Per Variety, "The Purge 3" is set to hit theaters on July 1 of next year.
