Zac Efron to Star in ‘Baywatch’ Film Adaptation
The hit show "Baywatch" from the 1990s about beautiful lifeguards on a California beach is being adapted for a new film on the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is going to star current Hollywood sensations Zac Efron and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
According to THR, Seth Gordon has been attached to the project as a director and will join the two stars in a potentially blockbuster film that will be released in 2017.
For those who do not know, "Baywatch" was a popular TV show in the 1990s that started the career of Pamela Anderson as a sex symbol, which led her to other roles and even some real-life tabloid scandals with then husband Tommy Lee.
According to E! News, the original show was more focused on the sexier side of the series, consistently showing the action scenes of the beautiful lifeguards running to the aid of potential drowning victims in slow motion. The scenes prominently exploited the motions of their various body movements and featured them saving the day.
The show also starred David Hasselhoff and ran from 1989 to 2001.
THR reports that the film will focus on Johnson being the seasoned and experienced lifeguard on the beach, who is met with the hot headed, young, egotistical Efron. The plot will play out with Johnson and Efron fighting back against an environmental issue, where an oil spill looms on the horizon from a greedy oil tycoon.
Efron's status as a teen heartthrob has given way to a new slate of roles in which he blends his attractive figure with his comedic talents. He recently starred opposite Seth Rogen in the hit comedy "Neighbors," and he will be reprising his role in the sequel for that film.
Johnson's own star power has been on the rise lately with the release of blockbuster films "Furious 7" and "San Andreas."
