Boxing News 2015: Ricardo Mayorga Vows To Knockout, Put Shane Mosley in Coma
Ricardo Mayorga will face "Sugar" Shane Mosley in a rematch on Aug. 29 at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
Mosley, who has not fought since his seventh-round knockout loss to Anthony Mundine in November 2013, escaped with a 12th round knockout win during their first fight in September 2008.
Mosley floored Mayorga for good in the final seconds of the match. Before the knockout, Mosley was slightly ahead in two of the judges' scorecards -- 107-102 and 105-104 -- while the third judge had it 105-104. The 43-year-old has a 47-9-1 record with 29 of his wins coming by way of knockout.
Mayorga, who holds a 31-8-1 record with 25 knockouts, said the loss is still fresh in his mind, which makes him very determined to avenge the defeat in their upcoming rematch.
The 41-year-old Nicaraguan said that he will go all out right from the opening bell as he is looking to win by knockout. Mayorga promised to score a knockout win in the opening round and put Mosley in coma.
"I will knock him out in the first round," Mayorga told BoxingScene. "I don't want people after the fight saying that he was already beat up or that it was luck. I'm telling you I will knockout him out in the first round. It will be worth it to buy the fight. I am going to put him in a coma."
Mayorga and Mosley met in a press confidence in Las Vegas during the weekend, and the two veteran boxers nearly came to blow. Mosley slapped a cigarette Mayorga was holding, which prompted the latter to push his opponent.
Mayorga said that the incident convinced him that Mosley is afraid of him.
"Shane is scared of me," Mayorga said. "I was just smoking a cigarette and he pushed it away. Is he a man? I pushed him hard because men are to be hit. You don't hit a woman but you hit a man."
Mayorga, who is coming off a fifth-round knockout win against Andrik Saralegui in December last year, said that Mosley is now regretting his decision to agree to a rematch.
"Before this press conference I don't think he was afraid of me but now I can see it," Mayorga added. "When I looked in his face I can see that he knows he made a mistake in picking me. He's already finished."
