Nina Dobrev may not have filmed her last episode of the hit CW series "The Vampire Diaries."

According to TVLine, during a panel for the Television Critics Association, CW president Mark Pedowitz discussed Dobrev leaving the show and teased the possibility of the actress returning.

"We would have loved Nina to stay," Pedowitz told reporters. "She did a great job for the six years she was on the show. She is welcome back any time she wants to come back."

Dobrev spoke to People about her last day of filming and explained how grateful she was for the opportunity.

"It was very sad. Bittersweet," she said.

"There wasn't a moment that went by that I wasn't incredibly nostalgic and very self-aware and very in the moment. I knew that every time I did something, it was the last time I was going to do that thing. ... I was very aware of how lucky I am -- and how lucky I've been over the past six years -- to have this incredible family, and [I'm] very aware of how much I'm going to miss them."

Dobrev is close to her cast mates, which includes ex-boyfriend Ian Somerhalder, now married to "Twilight" actress Nikki Reed.

"I was very torn," the 26-year-old said.

"I'm excited for the next step but also very sad to leave this chapter. But I'll get to see them -- they're friends of mine that are very near and dear to my heart, and hopefully they're going to be friends I'll have for the rest of my life.

Dobrev's departure from the show isn't necessarily a negative thing. According Pedowitz, it has allowed for some big changes to the series.

"They started last year -- going into this coming season - focusing on [Ian Somerhalder's] Damon and [Paul Wesley's] Stefan," Pedowitz said.

"As you know, we've had great success doing shows about brothers. [And] Kat Graham and Candice Accola's characters are stepping up in ways that we are very happy with."
