Even as the flick is rumored to be cashing in big time at film box offices across the country, Los Angeles police are voicing their displeasure with the weekend release of "Straight Outta Compton."

According to TMZ, a growing number of LAPD members are outraged over the overall portrayal of cops in the film, insisting that it largely depicts officers as "beating machines," brutalizing and preying on innocent, inner city victims.

"It's a terrible time to release a movie like this," said former L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine, who was also once a member of the LAPD. "It adds fuel to the fire for hating cops."

TMZ adds even more cops are outraged because they feel the film undermines all the hard work they've done in repairing frayed relationships after police abuse was admittedly once allowed to run rampant. According to the website, all of the officers reporters interviewed were in agreement that the timing on the release of the film couldn't be worse given the anti-police climate now permeating much of the country.

In the end, consensus opinion among LAPD members overwhelmingly appears to be that filmmaker Universal put profits ahead of concerns about officers' safety.

Meanwhile, Deadline reports the film hauled in at least $24.3 million during its opening on Friday and is expected to gross some $59 million over the weekend. Friday's receipts are the fourth highest for an August release, topping such blockbusters as "Rush Hour 2" ($23.1M), "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" ($22.2M), "Signs" ($20.9) and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" ($19.5M).

In addition, Rentrak's PostTrak reports that audiences gave the title a 5 out of 5 stars, with women even giving the F. Gary Gary-directed biopic up to a 76 percent definite recommend rating.

Reports are Universal is set to soon launch an official Oscar campaign for the film and will start Academy screenings as early as this weekend.
