Rosie O'Donnell's Daughter's Disappearance News Update: New Jersey Man Faces Child Endangerment Charges
Authorities in New Jersey have charged the man accused of harboring Rosie O'Donnell's 17-year-old daughter during the week she was recently missing with child endangerment.
In addition, People magazine reports 25-year-old Steven Sheerer also faces communication of obscenity charges. He was taken into custody Friday night at his Barnegat home and now faces up to 10 years behind bars.
According to the magazine, the arrest stems from investigators' search of 17-year-old Chelsea's phone, with her mother's consent, which turned up what authorities call "evidence of inappropriate communications over the last several weeks" between Sheerer and the girl.
"He was involved with a minor, and Rosie's concern has been and always will be the health, safety and well-being of her daughter," said O'Donnell's publicist Cindi Berger. "Rosie is profoundly appreciative for the work the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office has done and the diligence of the local police."
A police spokesperson later revealed Sheerer has previously faced charges of "third-degree possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, third-degree possession of heroin, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child and possession of drug paraphernalia."
Though investigators have not publicly said how the two met, those in the O'Donnell camp believe it was online, with a source close to the former "The View" host adding she "is very concerned about the guy [Chelsea] was found with. Rosie is extremely concerned about everything and is trying to figure out what to do next."
Meanwhile, bond for Sheerer has been set at $40,000, and prosecutors add he has been banned from having any contact with anyone in O'Donnell's family. Reports are it's not known if he has hired a lawyer or formally entered a plea to the charges.
During a search of Sheerer's home, investigators seized a computer and other digital equipment as potential evidence in their ongoing probe.
