HBO snags WWE superstar Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson for its newest comedy series, "Ballers". Deadline reports the half-hour show will focus on the lives of retired and active professional football players and the people around them.

"The Rock" will star as the retired athlete Spencer Strasmore. He will be joined by Omar Benson Miller who will be playing the role of Charles, a former athlete who's optimistically searching for the next step in his career.

The series will also feature Denzel Washington's son, John David, taking on the role of the highly competitive sports star Ricky, and comedian Rob Corddry as Joe, a financial advisor who's willing to go out of his way just to fit in in the world of the pro athletes.

Other cast members include Troy Garrity, Donovan Carter, Jazmyn Simon, Taylor Cole, and Letoya Luckett.

Johnson will be producing the show with "Pain and Gain" co-star Mark Wahlberg, Hiram Garcia, Evan Reilly, and Danny Garcia. Peter Berg will direct the series which is based on the script written by "Entourage" Executive Producer Stephen Levinson, according to an article on The Hollywood Reporter.

Cinemablend reports the series will begin production later this year, although a premiere date and an episode count have yet to be confirmed. "Ballers" joins HBO's roster for original comedies which includes "Veep", "Girls", "Looking", and Mike Judge's "Silicon Valley". It is the third series picked by HBO last week alongside David Fincher's "Utopia" and "The Brink".

Last month, "The Rock" tweeted photos while on the set of the "Ballers" pilot shoot. He wrote, "I don't hold people's hands... I hold their money. Our new HBO show, 'Baller' is dope. Coming soon..."

"Ballers" is Johnson's second small-screen project. He is currently the host of TNT's "The Hero", a reality show where contestants compete in a series of physically challenging events.
