BAFTA Awards 2014: 'Gravity' & '12 Years A Slave' Notch Top Honors; Which Films Were Snubbed?
Gravity and 12 Years A Slave notched the top two awards at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards over the weekend.
Gravity tallied the most awards won by any film with six, including awards in cinematography as well as music. Director Alfonso Cuaron was the winner of the best director for the film.
In other films, 12 Years a Slave Director Steve McQueen, who represented the slavery-based film by receiving the best movie award, made it clear in his acceptance speech that there are still 21 million people in slavery. "I just hope 150 years from now, our ambivalence will not allow another filmmaker to make this film," he also said, clearly showing the effect that the movie had on exposing the harsh realities of slavery.
The film was also responsible for best film and leading actor, Chiwetel Ejiofor.
It also comes as no surprise at all that there were a number of celebrities in attendance at the awards ceremony, including Prince William, who had the honor of presenting Helen Mirren with a BAFTA fellowship. Mirren is known for her role as Queen Elizabeth in The Queen. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt also attended and made an appearance at the event as the couple wore similar outfits.
Rapper Tinie Tempah opened the event and made sure to give Prince William a high five as he made his rounds along the front rows of the London Royal Opera House.
Although 12 Years A Slave notched the best film award, some people wondered why the film failed to win more awards after being nominated in eight other categories.
What did you think of the results and the BAFTA awards? Do you think it turned out as expected or were there some other films that deserved recognition? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
