Social media has become quite the dominating phenomenon in the past decade. Now, the two most dominant in the industry, Facebook and Twitter, have been broken down to market share by the numbers. According to Variety, there really isn't any competition though.

Although they both emerged around the same time and took the Internet by storm, the prevailing platform for social interaction goes to Facebook by quite a large margin.

Although Twitter has been a dominating force to send out small messages in the form of tweets, they have only been able to commandeer 23 percent of the adult market share. Given that this is a fairly low share, it still reeks with vibrant activity that pushes out and aggregates users who post about similar topics. The great thing about that is that it brings like-minded people together.

But when it comes to really telling a story, Facebook has been the platform for most. With its gigantic 72 percent of the adult market share for social media users, it has brightened the futures of many investors who flocked to it upon its original IPO (Initial Public Offering).

It has also made founder and president Mark Zuckerberg the youngest and most prosperous billionaire on the list, netting him just under $40 billion to date, according to Forbes.

So what's the difference? Well, although many people who use social media know the differences, it is fair to reason that Twitter is the quick chat platform, whereas Facebook gives it users more space to tell their stories. With the limited characters available in a tweet, some users find it more useful to simply engage on Facebook than on Twitter.

There have been many other social media platforms to emerge after the revolution started by the initial big two companies. But, Facebook has already absorbed one of them: Instagram.
