Cotto vs Canelo Fight News: Nov. 21 Showdown Bigger Than Tito Trinidad vs Oscar De La Hoya Bout, Says Golden Boy
Hall of Fame boxer turned promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes that the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez bout on Nov. 21 at the Mandalay Bay is the boxing fight every Mexican and Puerto Rican should anticipate for.
De La Hoya, who promotes the 25-year-old "Canelo," said that his company is dedicated to give the "best against the best for the fans," including the Cotto-Canelo clash, which he believes is a bigger event than the successful showdown between him and Felix "Tito" Trinidad in 1999, Boxing Scene reported.
"Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will be the most anticipated fight of the year, of the last recent years. I remember a fight that I was involved in against Felix Trinidad...This fight here is bigger than that. This fight here will live up to that expectation when you face a Mexican and a Puerto Rican inside that ring. We are going to get an explosion," De La Hoya predicted.
In an earlier Boxing scene report, the promoter also commended Cotto's contribution to the sport, which makes the match even more exciting.
"It will be bigger because of what Miguel Cotto has accomplished, being the first fight from Puerto Rico to be a champion in four divisions, and especially by how he looked in his last fight. He was strong, he was quick," De La Hoya shared.
In September 1999, Trinidad met De La Hoya for a welterweight unification fight. Prior to the bout, Trinidad entered the ring for his 15th defense of his International Boxing Federation title while De La Hoya was ready to secure his 8th defense of his World Boxing Council crown, noted BoxRec. In the end, Trinidad walked away victoriously with two belts under his name via a majority decision, even though De La Hoya felt "he had dominated the early rounds." The Trinidad-De La Hoya bout reportedly amassed 1.4 million pay-per-view subscriptions worth $71.4 million.
Could the Cotto-Canelo bout go beyond these figures? It is possible because there's so much in store for whoever wins the upcoming battle.
The winner this November will immediately face the victor of the Gennady Golovkin vs. David Lemieux Oct. 17 middleweight unification showdown happening at the Madison Square Garden in New York. One of the two knockout artists will don three belts from the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization held by "Triple G" and from the International Boxing Federation sported by Lemieux.
Thus, Cotto or Alvarez has the chance to sport four belts next year if he triumphs over Golovkin or Lemieux, and this thing alone should excite their fans.
