TNT Takes a Swing at the 60s With Period Cop Drama ‘Public Morals’ [Watch]
Period dramas from the 1960s era have already proven to be a quite a haul for cable television with the recent finale run of "Mad Men" on AMC. But now, TNT is trying its hand at it, and bringing cop and gangster drama "Public Morals" to fans of the era with a gritty take on how it played out, according to Deadline.
Fans of the period should make no mistake about this show. It is not another "Mad Men," but rather another gritty series that is intended for mature audiences. There are no glamorous sets that expound on 60s era fashion or intrigue. But there are impressive settings that nevertheless give the series a true-to-life feel.
The show is centered around Officer Terry Muldoon of the "Public Morals Division," portrayed on-screen by Ed Burns. Burns' character is a shady officer of the law, who employs a stranglehold on the area's crime syndicates that plague the city.
"Think of us as the landlord. If you want to live here, you have to pay the rent," Muldoon tells a person in the trailer. This was, of course, a common theme in the gritty FX show "The Shield."
Muldoon is up to his ears in the underworld and getting paid quite handsomely to operate on both sides of the law. His character is also supported by an outstanding cast, which includes Neal McDonough and Brian Dennehy, who are a father and son Irish mobster duo, who are as a ruthless as they are humane.
Timothy Hutton also stars in the series as a bookmaker for Muldoon.
The series mostly plays out in Hell's Kitchen in NYC with a strong West Side Irish mob theme that dominated the area in the time.
TNT has released a red-band trailer for the series and you can watch it below. Viewer discretion is advised.
