MLB: Are Los Angeles Dodgers in Trouble With Struggling Offense?
The Los Angeles Dodgers are just a month away from winning their third consecutive National League West title.
At 73-57, the Dodgers are in first place in the NL West ahead of the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers have had superb pitching and a phenomenal home record, but some MLB analysts are beginning to show concern over the team's offense.
The Dodgers offense now ranks 20th in runs scored, 25th in total hits, 17th in batting average and 24th in doubles. Thanks to Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke the Dodgers have an elite pitching staff that ranks fifth in team defense, but come playoff time, the Dodgers will need more from their bats.
Only Mexican-American infielder Adrian Gonzalez and Joc Pederson have more than 15 home runs on the Dodgers roster. Gonzalez recently hit a walk off shot against the Giants in the 14th inning on Monday night. Although Gonzalez has been hitting the long ball frequently, he is batting .284 and Pederson is batting just .212. Not a single player on the Dodgers has a .300 batting average.
The Dodgers have been hitting home runs at a fairly high rate. Although the Dodgers rank 20th in runs scored, they have hit the sixth most home runs in the entire league this season, even more than the Los Angeles Angels. What that tells us is that the Dodgers are relying greatly on the deep ball instead of consistent base hits. History tells us that teams who rely on the home run usually don't tend to do very well in the postseason compared to other teams.
The Dodgers were no-hit twice in August, once against the Chicago Cubs and again by the Houston Astros.
As it stands now the Dodgers are in control of the NL West, but they are tied with the New York Mets for wins (73) in the National League. It's World Series or bust for this Dodgers team, and grabbing home-field advantage will be extremely important. The Dodgers are a very below average road team, so traveling to St. Louis (where Clayton Kershaw has had huge problems) or New York in the playoffs could spell trouble. Defeating the Cardinals as a No. 2 seed won't even be easy.
The Dodgers offense isn't terrible, but there's definitely room for improvement. Yasiel Puig, who is having a disappointing season, will have to step up his play when he returns from the disabled list. Puig batted .319 his rookie season but is batting just .256 this year.
If the season were to end today, the Dodgers would face the Mets in the second round of the playoffs.
