‘Danish Girl’ Trailer: Watch Eddie Redmayne Transform Into a Woman in New Teaser [Video]
"Danish Girl" dropped its first trailer and the captivating story makes a lasting impression with the two-and-a-half minute clip. The biopic of Lili Elbe, the world's first transgender, is simultaneously inspiring and heart-wrenching.
The talent of Academy Award-winner Eddie Redmayne is in full display in this film as he stars artist Einar Wegener, who paved an unforgettable path when he transitioned into Lili Elbe. The teaser captured the scene he first posed as a woman for his wife and fellow artist Gerda Wegener, a significant moment when he realized he is not who he thought he was.
"I believe that I am a woman," he admitted in the trailer. Later he is adamant to get the then-unexplored option of gender reassignment surgery, saying, "It's my only hope. This is not my body. I have to let it go."
It's an empowering journey, but as freeing it is for Lili, the story also explores the side of her life and creative partner, Gerda.
Alicia Vikander plays opposite Redmayne as Gerda, the beautiful wife who's heartbreak is palpable on the screen as she watches and supports the transformation of her husband.
"I love you, because you're the only person who made sense of me," Elbe said in one scene. "Who made me possible."
Indeed, as she sets on an unknown path, the one beside her is Gerda. When Elbe first voices out her realization, the wife told her, "I believe you."
Make no mistake, this is a love story as much as it is a tale of self-discovery.
The cast brings the story to life tremendously well and at the heart of it all is Redmayne. One of the most sought-after actors in his generation, he was the single actor that Hooper had in mind when first handed the reins to the project.
"I was a great believer in him as an actor," he said in an interview with Screen Daily. "I think also there's a certain gender fluidity that I sensed in him, that I found intriguing and it led me to think he might be a really interesting person to cast in this role."
Although the team considered casting a transgender in the role, they were not able to find one who fit better than Redmayne.
Hooper explained, "I think there's a tremendous pool of talented trans actors out there, and I think there's probably a journey to go on to make sure that talented trans actors have the same access to opportunities both in front of and behind the character as cisgendered actors."
"The Danish Girl" is based on the biographical novel by author David Ebershoff. The 2015 film adaptation is directed by Tom Hooper. Cast includes Redmayne, Vikander, Rachel Weisz, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ben Whishaw and Uma Thurman.
"The Danish Girl" is slated for theatrical release on Nov. 27.
