The first single off of Demi Lovato's upcoming album "Confident" may have been a summer-themed anthem, but the star recently revealed that the majority of her album is far more emotional, especially when singing about her late father.

"It's extremely raw [but] I definitely had some closure," Lovato told Entertainment Weekly about the song she dedicated to her estranged father, Patrick Lovato, who died of cancer in 2013.

The album, Lovato says, has helped her grow as a whole and while it features a couple of "sexy songs" it is very soulful.

"I feel very secure in who I am as an artist and as a person," she continued. "I never write songs that are about things I don't relate to. I won't be able to sing it if I don't mean it."

The "Cool for the Summer" singer, who performed the hit song at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards with friend and rapper Iggy Azalea, also revealed who her female musical influences are.

"Pat [Benatar] was one of my big influences growing up," she said. "There's not a lot of powerful female vocalists in the rock industry. I really looked up to Hayley [Williams], too, because she's totally like Pat Benatar. And I don't want to see influenced music fade."

While Lovato is currently making waves on the radio herself, the singer revealed she hasn't always been a big fan of mainstream music but has grown to understand that you can't be a huge star and not have hit radio songs.

"I used to be a music snob," she explained. "I never listened to the radio. I listened to stuff you've never heard of. But you can be super talented, but if you don't have a hit song you won't get that level of success."

Lovato recently revealed the tracklist and cover artwork for her upcoming album through social media, reported E! Online. The 23-year-old had a few of her celebrity friends, including boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama and stars like Nick Jonas, Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Seacrest and Kim Kardashian tweet the song names.
