Syfy ‘Dark Matter,’ ‘Killjoys’ Season 2 Moving Forward
Syfy has officially renewed the freshest meat in its caldron of sci-fi hits, giving both "Dark Matter" and "Killjoys" a second season order for the shows that premiered earlier this summer and performed well on a Friday night time slot that has traditionally been a weak night for TV ratings.
Although giving a new show a Friday night time slot has been generally considered a weak move, the two series aired right on top of each other and managed to perform well for a cable network sci-fi drama, according to Variety. That was all the incentive necessary for giving both of the shows a sophomore run and a chance to really shine with dedicated sci-fi fans.
Fox originally aired its hit show "The X-Files" on Fridays, and the show performed exceptionally well for the network back in the '90s. If that is any indicator, then the Friday night weak ratings curse for TV seems to have found its genre weakness that proves to be a draw for viewers.
In terms of the quality of the content and story for these two shows, "Dark Matter" performed better than nearly all other shows on the cable network. It was second only to the third season of "Defiance."
"Dark Matter" is basically a show that resembles the mystery of "Lost," only aboard a spaceship. It features six characters who awaken only to realize they do not know who they are and how they got aboard a spaceship.
"Killjoys" is quite deceptive title, but nonetheless engaging. The story is about a trio of bounty hunters that traverse the outer reaches of the universe to hunt down criminals and fugitives that have a warrant out on them. They do so amongst galactic strife, set in a planetary system far away from our own. The coalition of planetary systems are in the middle of a class war, which mirrors the strife inherent on our own planet.
Deadline reports that "Dark Matter" has been given a 13-episode order, and "Killjoys" has been given a 10-episode order for a Season 2 2016 premiere date.
