‘Penny Dreadful’ Season 3 Spoilers: Dr. Jekyll and Others Debut on Series
Showtime's horror series "Penny Dreadful" has taken all the classic monsters and characters and woven them into a single series. That will also be the case in Season 3 when the show debuts the classic character Dr. Henry Jekyll, from the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The unique style of the show has brought about the theme of weaving characters of classic horror literature together for one greater premise that will no doubt lead to an epic conclusion for the series.
The role of Jekyll in season three will be played by Shazad Latif, who is best known his role on "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel."
Season 3 is expected to expand the setting for the show, which until now has been limited to the underworld of Victorian London. The season is set to portray more of the world at the time. There will also five new characters introduced for the nine-episode season.
Actress Patti LuPone is also expected to come back this season. She previously played the role of the Cut-Wife. She is now coming back as a performer who will be portraying the role of Dr. Seward. Although the role is painfully close to the character in the Bram Stoker novel "Dracula," Seward will be an American therapist with unconventional methods for treating Vanessa.
Wes Studi will also be joining the cast as a series regular. He will portray a Native American man that has deep connections to Josh Hartnett's Ethan, who eventually becomes a powerful ally to Timothy Dalton's Sir Malcolm.
Billie Piper and Reeve Carney are also set to return to the series as Lily and Dorian Gray. The pair will take on a new acolyte named Justine, played by Jessica Barden.
Series creator John Logan spoke with THR about Season 3.
"Season 3 is a real change of pace for us, which is good," Logan said. "We can get out of the alleys and cobblestone bars of Victorian London and see a bit more of the world. Essentially there's a pull bringing these characters together, and it's supernatural, partly romantic, partly shared destiny."
