All the love and goodwill got to Justin Bieber.

The "Baby" singer mysteriously broke down in tears during his Sunday night performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, and recently he told talk show host Jimmy Fallon it was all because he was so overwhelmed by all the love his peers were showing him.

"It was just so overwhelming for me, everything, just the performance -- I missed some cues so I was a little disappointed at that -- and just everyone, just the support," People magazine reports Bieber said. "Honestly, I just wasn't expecting them to support me in the way they did. ... Last time I was at an award show I was booed."

Since then, Bieber claimed he's worked tirelessly at becoming both a better man and musician, and during his MTV performance the emotions born of all that simply got the best of him.

"I've worked so hard on this album, I've worked so hard at becoming the man I want to become," he said. "Stepping into situations, you just can't help but feel judged, so I was just feeling judged and just wanting to win so badly and wanting to do what I love so badly that I just put everything on the line."

Bieber's latest single "What Do You Mean" was released late last week, and his first album in three year is set to hit shelves on Nov. 13.

With all the idle time, Bieber came to have more than a few experiences he'd rather forget. He chalked that up to having a few too many of the wrong people around him at a time when he was his most vulnerable.

"I had a bunch of knuckleheads around me, that was pretty much it," he said. "I just went through a place of trying to figure it out ... You have to figure out what you're okay with and you're not okay with, but you have to test the waters."
