Reports of a new "Goonies" movie have been floating around for some time now, as first reported by TMZ. But now, Richard Donner, the director for the original film, has been making some strides with the project and reports that Steven Spielberg has also been reattached to the project.

The film is expected to be a sequel, basically Donner's way of saying it is not a reboot, a remake or some side project spinoff. He anticipates having all of his original cast back for the new project, and that also means bringing back Spielberg, who served as a second unit director for the original film.

The original film featured Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Sean Astin in leading roles, among other child actors at the time. Suffice it to say, the actors who are all grown up now can have a major presence in the film, if it is premised on their grown up lives and how they interact with each other on a new adventure.

Uproxx also reports Donner is planning a new project that puts the audience right in the middle of the action. He is planning on bringing the original story to a stageplay of sorts. But this is not going to be any regular stageplay.

This event is expected to be an immersive experience. The stageplay takes place in a warehouse, and the audience is not simply seated but rather standing and following the stars around as they engage in various aspects of the adventure story.

"You become part of it, and you travel through with actors," Donner said. "It's very popular now. ... It will take another year or so, but it's going to be wonderful."

There has been no official word when the movie or the immersive stage play event will begin at this time.
