'Spectre' News Update: Sam Smith Confirmed to Sing the New Theme Song
Sam Smith has been confirmed to sing the upcoming song for "Spectre."
Sony announced the news the day after the Grammy award-winning singer tweeted a photo with a ring that featured the logo to the upcoming James Bond film.
The new song will be called "Writing's on the Wall" and Smith said in a press release, "This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy."
Smith had been rumored for a long time but he has continuously denied the news. Back in July the singer told Capital FM that he had no idea about the film and that Ellie Goulding would most likely do the song. He said, "People seem to think I'm doing it but I have no idea what's going on. I'm being deadly serious. I think I would know by now. I heard Ellie Goulding was going to do it, it's definitely not me."
Smith will follow Adele who wrote and sung the song for "Skyfall." That song was lauded by critics and went on to win an Oscar.
Adele was previously rumored to repeat but she denied the rumors. Other singers who have sung Bond-theme songs have included Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon and Duran Duran.
"Spectre" has already finished production and the movie will tell the story of "007, who receives a cryptic message his past and must uncover a sinister organization. Meanwhile M must battle political forces to keep the secret service alive."
The movie stars Daniel Craig in his fourth outing as James Bond, Oscar winner Christoph Waltz as villain Franz Oberhauser, Monica Bellucci, Léa Seydoux and Stephanie Sigman as the Bond girls. Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes will reprise his role as M and Ben Whishaw will return as Q. The movie also stars Naomie Harris as Moneypenny.
"Spectre" is set to open on Nov. 6 and in October in the U.K.
