Soccer Transfer: Real Madrid Won't Chase David De Gea in January Window
The David De Gea to Real Madrid saga is coming to an end according to Madrid president Fiorentino Perez as he told Spanish radio Cadena COPE. Perez thinks that De Gea should focus on his career saying, as quoted by The Mirror, "De Gea has to do what is best for his sporting career. For now we aren't thinking about what will happen next season."
"We have three magnificent goalkeepers. We don't know what will happen inside the next year," Perez added. The shot stoppers Perez is talking about are Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla, and Ruben Yañez.
Speaking of Navas, he was supposed to be sent to Manchester United and £29 million for the heir to Iker Casillas post in Madrid. The deal reportedly collapsed after paperwork did not meet the Spanish transfer deadline, as per ESPN.
The two sides have since blamed each other on who was at fault at the embarrassing gaffe. Madrid, United and De Gea all appeared to be moving on from all of it.
Perez made it clear that De Gea is not going to Madrid come the winter transfer, saying via The Mirror, "In January we are not going to sign De Gea. He's got to do what he's got to do. It's very unlikely that he will spend this year in a white shirt."
"Real Madrid did what it had to do. We did everything possible in order that he could come here. De Gea did everything possible not to renew his deal and we had to make an effort to make sure he doesn't feel abandoned. There was a kind of agreement with him before Keylor arrived, if United had given us the opportunity," the Real Madrid president added.
Spanish newspaper AS reports via ESPN that De Gea and United are close to signing a contract extension. The player's agent Jorge Mendes is already negotiating a new deal. In a separate report from ESPN, Spanish National Team coach Vicente del Bosque warned De Gea that he won't be selected for the Euro 2016 lineup if he does not play first team football.
After playing in his first competitive match this season against Macedonia, De Gea was interviewed by BBC on his thoughts about his performance and future plans. "I felt good. I really wanted to play. Now I need to keep working and see if I have some good fortune at my club as well," the Spanish keeper said.
"My future will be the same as now: remain calm, keep working and improving. In concrete terms, enjoy my football. I am happy," De Gea added. His future could very well be with United as he can be the starter against rivals Liverpool in their next Premier League match.
