AMC Orders Seth Rogen Supernatural Drama ‘Preacher’
AMC has picked up yet another comic book supernatural series, this time from funnyman and comedian Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.
"Preacher" will be a serious thriller drama, but will also have a lot of comedic elements in it that were so inherent to the comic series of the same name, according to Deadline.
The show has a certain amount of quirkiness attached to it from the very get-go. It is about a conflicted preacher named Jesse Custer, played by Dominic Cooper. Custer hails from a small town in Texas and he is afflicted with a mysterious entity that allows him to have a specific unique power. This highly unconventional power has its costs though. He is accompanied by an ex-girlfriend named Tulip (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), who just so happens to be an Irish vampire.
The series has tons of potential to turn out both comedy and drama given the complexity of the characters, which were created by Garth Ennis in the comic series. With Rogen attached to the project, there is no doubt that it will lead to some specific comical areas that have often left his viewers a little disturbed.
"Garth Ennis' 'Preacher' is, above all, about great characters -- something we look for in all of our series," Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV, told Deadline. "The fact that it is also darkly funny, has some great supernatural elements, and takes us on an incredible adventure is just the icing on the cake"
The network has indeed been well-known for turning out great shows with complex characters. It is the home the current ratings champ "The Walking Dead" and former series like "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men." So fans can expect the story of this series to have all those complexities they have come to love from other shows on the network.
