‘Sons of Anarchy’ Spinoff ‘Mayans’ May Feature ‘Sons’ Characters
There have been talks between "Son of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter and industry executives about doing a spinoff for the show and now, there may be two spinoffs in the works.
According to Deadline, the first spinoff would feature the origins of the infamous SAMCRO biker gang starting way back in Vietnam with the often referenced John Teller. If this series does end up coming to fruition, the characters may be returning, but they would be played by younger actors that would reflect their age in the '70s.
The other spinoff that was talked about during Deadline's interview with Sutter is the possibility of having a "Mayans" series that chronicles the rival biker gang in the show.
"The Mayan thing happened as I was talking to Eric Schrier, one of the FX executives I've known since 'The Shield,'" Sutter told Deadline. "We were talking about the idea of doing things for other markets, like the Spanish-speaking market. I casually said I'd be open to doing something with the Mayans."
The spinoff itself would be a completely different show than "Sons," but that doesn't mean one of the SAMCRO boys wouldn't cameo in it.
"It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of that culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand," Sutter said. "I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told. It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed."
Those crossovers could be any one of the surviving members of the Sons, but it wouldn't be Jax Teller given his demise at the end of the series.
"I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that. It would be cannibalizing what we worked very hard to create and I wouldn't do anything to undermine," Sutter said.
