The stage is set for a clash of monstrous proportions. "Kong: Skull Island" is reportedly being moved from Universal to Warner Bros., making a crossover between King Kong and Godzilla entirely possible.

According to a report from Variety, the "King Kong" prequel's move to a different production company is not a done deal, but one that is likely to happen to make way for the big crossover. Warner Bros. owns the sequel rights to "Godzilla."

Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts ("The Kings of Summer"), the prequel of "King Kong" is currently under production. It features an impressive cast including Tom Hiddleston ("Thor"), Brie Larson ("Trainwreck"), Corey Hawkins ("Straight Outta Compton") and Jason Mitchell ("Straight Outta Compton").

Veteran actors Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons were originally supposed to star, but scheduling conflicts forced them to pull out of the film this July, according to Deadline.

Larson first announced her participation in the film on social media. She posted on Twitter a photo of an envelope with a note that read, "Brie, Welcome to the jungle. Love, King Kong."

"Here we go! #skullisland @VogtRoberts @twhiddleston @Legendary" her tweet said, tagging the Twitter handles of director Roberts, co-star Hiddleston and the production company.

Although the casting is practically completed and confirmed, not a lot of other details have been revealed about the reported prequel.

According to Variety, the origin story will revolve around a group of explorers who will enter the heart of an island, which turns out to be the dangerous sanctuary of King Kong.

Production has yet to begin for the much-awaited new "King Kong" movie. A report from The Hollywood Reporter said that "Kong: Skull Island" is scheduled to begin shooting in Hawaii this October. Other destinations the cast and crew will be shooting at include Iceland and Vietnam.

Legendary Picture's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will be producing the film, along with Mary Parent. Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia are the executive producers. Reports say the new "King Kong" film will be released in 3D and IMAX 3D.

"Kong: Skull Island" is expected to debut in theaters on March 10, 2017.

Meanwhile, NZ Herald reported that "Godzilla 2" is set to hit theaters in July 2018. The battle of the classic monsters may not make it to the big screen until after these respective solo films, but when it does, it is sure to be a clash of the ages.
