Police Confirm Jessica Heeringa's Blood Found At Gas Station Abduction Site
Police in Michigan revealed on Wednesday that a substance found outside the Exxon Mobil gas station where Jessica Heeringa was believed to have been recently abducted is blood belonging to the missing woman.
"The substance has been confirmed as blood," authorities said in a statement. "Based on a subsequent DNA analysis, the blood has been confirmed to be from Jessica Lynn Heeringa."
Heeringa, a 25-year-old mother of one has been missing for nearly two weeks. She reportedly disappeared during her shift at the Exxon Mobil on East Sternberg Road in Norton Shores on April 26th, according to reports.
The amount of blood that investigators found outside the gas station was so minute that it couldn't be used to test for anything but DNA, according to Norton Shores Police Chief Dan Shaw.
Heeringa's family members told reporters that they felt a sense of relief because the fact that so little blood was found at the abduction site likely indicates that the woman had probably sustained only minor injuries when she was kidnapped, increasing hope in the likelihood that she is alive and has survived any attack on her.
According to Shaw, the droplet of blood confirms only one thing: that Heeringa was abducted.
"We all know that she was abducted. We had enough evidence to determine that she was abducted and this confirms that," Shaw said. "She was obviously taken against her will and put up some sort of struggle. She was somehow injured. How severely, we don't know. We hope it's a minor injury. We need to find her quickly, get her medical attention and get her home to her family."
On May 2nd authorities released a surveillance video of a van that they believe is connected to Heeringa's disappearance. The van is a grey or silver minivan, make and model unknown. The driver is described as a white male between 30 and 40 years old, 6' tall, medium to heavy build with broad shoulders and light brown or sandy blond wavy hair, Michigan news outlet mLive reports. Police have released a sketch of the man in recent days.
mLive describes Heeringa as a white female, 5'1" tall, 110 pounds with blond shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. She is also known to sometimes wear wire-rimmed glasses.
