NFL Trade Rumors 2015: New York Jets Eyeing Kirk Cousins?
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith made headlines after suffering a broken jaw in the hands of former teammate IK Enemkpali last Aug. 7. He is out for six to 10 weeks and will likely miss the first four games of the season, according to ESPN.
The Jets quickly looked for potential quarterbacks including Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson, but eventually settled for backup Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter and Bryce Petty as his backup. In a report by Ian Rapoport on NFL Network's "GameDay Morning," the Jets inquired about Washington Redskins Kirk Cousins.
As quoted by NFL.com, Rapoport said, "The Jets did not know how long Geno Smith would be out and they did their due diligence, calling all around the league. The most interesting team they called was the Washington Redskins. I am told the Jets inquired about trading for now-starter Kirk Cousins."
"The Redskins would not consider it, wouldn't even talk about it. It just wasn't clear why, because at that point RGIII was the starter. But make no mistake, the Redskins knew what they had in Kirk Cousins. They would not trade him and they believe he's a big part of their future," Rapoport added.
New York should reconsider trade talks as Robert Griffin III was relegated to the third-choice quarterback. After he was cleared from a concussion, RGIII was put in the third quarterback role, and the coach Jay Gruden named Colt McCoy as the backup, as per NFL.com.
As for Cousins, he faced the Miami Dolphins for his first start in the season opener. The Redskins lost 17-10 against the Dolphins with Cousins having a sub-par game. He went 21 for 31 for 196 yards, throwing one touchdown with two interceptions.
"We battled and came up short. I guess we're all pretty tired of that around here. We've done that too many times. So eventually the tables need to turn. The tide needs to be turned. And we need a day like today to end up having us be on top at the end," Cousins said after the game via another report from ESPN.
Jets Coach Todd Bowles is probably happy that he stuck with Ryan Fitzpatrick. The quarterback went 15 for 24 for 179 yards, throwing two touchdowns with one interception in their 31-10 win over the Cleveland Browns. "It feels good to get the butterflies out of the way, to get that first one," Bowles told ESPN after the game.
The Jets should look for other positions as rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin suffered head and neck injuries while cornerback Antonio Cromartie injured his knee in the second quarter. No words yet on the status of both players.
